Garden rooms, patios, wind breaks, vegetable garden, front garden and wildlife pond
This garden was a blank canvas surrounded by farmland. The brief was to turn it into a number of garden rooms with different seasonal interest/palettes, areas to sit at different times of the day, a potager-style vegetable garden, naturalistic wild areas planted with native hedging and trees, some shaped topiary and a wildlife pond.
Exposed at the top of a hill, yew beech, laurel and hornbeam hedges were used as a windbreak and to encourage nesting birds/wildlife. Two patios were installed, one of either side of the house to allow morning and evening sun, and a front gravel garden was created with a lavendar-lined brick path to the door surrounded by scented shrubs. A cottage garden with pink, blue, purple and white planting was created on the east-facing side, and a 'hot' border created on the south-facing garden with vibrant intense reds, deep purples and oranges including obelisks of clematis and grasses. A new wildlife pond was created opposite the conservatory with marginal plants and a bog garden, surrounded by shrubs and perennial planting. Wild areas with appropriate seed mixes were created, with mown paths and evergreen clipped topiary to guide you around the garden.
